What are Shaker and Craftsman Style Sliding Doors?

Most of these door designs are inspired by the Shaker and Craftsman design traditions. Here’s a little background about each:

Shaker

The Shaker religious movement originated in England and came to North America in the 1700s. Shakers believe that hard work in pursuit of perfection is in itself a spiritual act. As a result, Shakers became famous for the quality of their furniture and other housewares. Shaker style is typified by:

Craftsman

Comes from the Arts and Crafts design movement of the early 1900s. The hallmarks of this design movement are practicality and use of locally sourced and natural materials. Other major design features in the Craftsman style include:

Craftsman Vs. Shaker: Which Door Style is Right For You?

Craftsman and Shaker styles are similar, but the Craftsman style generally allows for a little bit more ornamentation than the Shaker style. This is also true when it comes to door hardware. A traditional offset barn door pull looks great on Shaker sliding doors, while the Craftsman style really comes alive with hand-forged braided styles or ring pulls.

Which style is right for your space? That depends on your preferences and existing furniture pieces.
