5 Ways to Update Your Home with a Rustic Refresh

With spring finally warming up our world and the sun shining longer each evening, you're probably ready to shake the winter blues and refresh your space to welcome the new season. The traditional charm of farmhouse decor style is sure to add warmth and breathe new energy into your space. You don't need to make over an entire room to make it feel updated and welcoming - so if you are looking for simple ways to add a rustic refresh to your home, read on! Here are 5 rustic décor ideas for your home.

1. Add Texture

Rustic style is all about texture - weathered woods, natural textiles like linen and burlap, dried flowers or branches, and metal accents are all great ways to make a room feel welcoming and lived-in. Wood floors with wide planks are a hallmark of the classic American farmhouse look, especially in quarter-sawn oak or light honey maple. If wood floors aren't an option, a reclaimed wood accent wall can make an incredible difference in the feel of a room. Buy a kit of ready-to-go planks for a super-easy update you can do in a few hours that adds impact and dimension to a blank wall.

Add a galvanized steel pitcher or glass carafe filled with peonies, lilacs, or tulips to an accent table for a nature-infused touch. For a more permanent option, try dried pussy willows, lavender, or cotton stems. You can even make a wreath out of them and hang it on an interior door.

2. Make it Modern

Farmhouse style no longer has to mean grandma doilies, rocking chairs, and patchwork quilts (although if that's your style, go for it!) You can make the farm style look current and on-trend by fusing industrial elements. Edison light bulbs add an artsy loft vibe and give off soothing, warm light. Mason jars have countless uses - flower vases, candles holders, snack canisters, kitchen utensil caddies... and they look great no matter what you decide to use them for. Put them to work in any room for a look that is both rustic chic and affordable.

Sliding barn door hardware is a trend that has evolved over the years into more modern options. A stainless steel or solid brass cylinder style track is unique and contemporary, and makes an interesting contrast against a natural wood door in a traditional barn style like an x-brace.

3. Keep It Clean

The key to making this design style feel rustic and refreshing, and not cluttered, is to keep it minimal. Opt for white walls to let the decor elements or occasional accent wall shine. If white paint is too plain for your liking, beadboard will add some texture - or go for floor-to-ceiling shiplap for a farmhouse-meets-beach house look. Choose lightweight curtains that allow some light to shine through, in airy hues like powder blue, cream, or sage green. Keep tables uncluttered and use simple linen tablecloths, a floral centerpiece, or candlesticks.

4. Repurpose

Farmhouse decor evokes a sense of yesteryear's resourcefulness. Sand thrift store furniture and paint it white for that trendy shabby chic look. Save glass jars for flower vases, drinking glasses, or collecting odds and ends. Collect wine corks and glue them into a frame for a DIY bulletin board. Use reclaimed barn wood and build your own DIY barn door or headboard.

5. Let Your Personality Shine

More important than following by-the-book design principles or investing in expensive pieces to follow the latest trends, you want the final look to reflect YOU! Incorporate objects that have meaning to you - a framed print of your child's painting, an heirloom teacup on a shelf, a pitchfork from your grandad's barn used as wall decor, a hope chest sanded and stained to give it new life... when you fill your home with soulful objects that bring you joy to see every day, they are more than just "things."

If you love the color yellow, use it! If you don't like wood floors, use rugs with playful patterns instead! The choice is yours. Make your home truly yours with custom made goods, like bespoke textiles, customized wood doors, and original art.
