Entry Door Quiz: Dutch, Pivot, or Standard?

With so many options out there, it can be hard to know what entry door is best for you. Do you embrace a farmhouse vibe with a Dutch door? Or opt for something more contemporary like a pivot door? Which door type can be adapted for a more accessible entryway, and which is best for families with small kids or pets that can get out? It's an overwhelming choice to make if you aren't sure where to start. To get some clarity, take our quiz to decide which RealCraft entry door is right for you.

1. Which of the following best describes your style?

  • a) Contemporary/modern
  • b) Farmhouse or rustic
  • c) Eclectic

2. What's your biggest problem with your current entry door set-up?

  • a) It's not optimal for members of my family/friends/guests who need an accessible entryway
  • b) I'm afraid my kids/dog will run out of the house every time I have to open the door to accept a delivery
  • c) I just want a new, fresh look but I don't have any of the problems from a and b

3. What's the most important thing to you about your front door?

  • a) It has to make a bold statement
  • b) It has to be practical
  • c) It has to be made from real materials

4. Do you want your front door to have glass?

  • a) Not necessarily, but side lights would be nice!
  • b) Yes, I want more natural light!
  • c) I could go either way, the overall design is more important.

5. Do you ever wish your home got more fresh air?

  • a) Not really, but I would like to be able to keep the door open without a doorstop
  • b) Yes, I'd love a door that let in more fresh air when I wanted it
  • c) Not really, I get fresh air from my windows

6. What's your biggest door deal breaker?

  • a) A door that slams shut

Mostly A's: Pivot Doors

Pivot doors offer more control of the door's movement than any other door style. That's because we use top of the line pivot hardware that allows you to adjust opening and closing speeds, as well as setting a stopping point, so your door is slam proof. This also means the door can stay open on its own, which is a better option if accessibility is your highest priority.

Pivot doors can also be built taller and wider than standard doors because of how the pivot works. If you want a really large door that makes a statement, pivot doors are best for you. Plus, they look incredible with sidelights and transom windows to further emphasize the scale of the door. Shop our Pivot door capsule collection here

Mostly B's: Dutch Doors

If you want a practical, adaptable door, then Dutch Doors are best for you. Optimal for families with small children and dogs, they allow you to open the upper door leaf to receive deliveries or let fresh air in--without your little loved ones getting out. You can also add a shelf for cooling baked goods or setting down gardening tools or your morning coffee. Our Dutch doors come with an optional (but recommended) cane bolt connecting the top and bottom door leaves, plus boring for a deadbolt on both halves of the door, so it remains secure. Mostly C's: Standard Entry

If the door design itself is the most important thing to you, and you don't need any additional features, then go for standard entry. We have over 30 designs to choose from, in styles ranging from traditional to contemporary. All of our entry doors--standard, pivot, and Dutch--are built with real materials, including solid wood and insulated glass. And they all come with the option to add side lights and a matching wood jamb so you can customize them to make each design your own. Shop our standard entry doors here
