Application Tips

  • For a clear and natural finish for decking, apply just two coats of 007 Clear Oil, which allows the wood to naturally grey over time.
  • The darker the color, the slower the greying process of the wood will start to appear.
  • Recommended application is 35ml/m²

Note: The above color shades are a true likeness of the original, after application onto Bangkirai, Teak and Larch. Products may be applied to any wood species, however, some variation may occur due to species variation, screen brightness and uploading processes. It is advisable to test colors on a small sample, as some colors may appear differently on other wood species.

Data Sheets

Preparation

Ensure that wood surfaces to be treated with Osmo UV Protection Oil are clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%).

NEW WOOD

  1. Surfaces should be sanded with a 120 grit abrasive and no finer
  2. New wood and especially hardwoods should be allowed to weather for approximately 6 weeks prior to oiling
  3. De-grease surfaces with methylated spirit or Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) before oiling
  4. Fill any holes or gaps with an exterior gap sealer

Please Note: Allowing the wood to weather, especially dense exotic hardwoods, enables the tight, dense grain of the timber to open up. This makes it easier to apply the oil and allows it to penetrate deeper in to the wood grain.

OLD WOOD

  1. Clean old microporous finishes (wood oils) thoroughly
  2. Areas affected by mould, algae and moss must be cleaned and treated
  3. Old paints, lacquers and varnish like stains must be completely removed
  4. The colour of timber that has turned grey / silver over time can be restored prior to oiling with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609)
  5. Then treat as New Wood

Application

Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the tin at all times.

  1. Stir thoroughly before and periodically during application
  2. Where possible treat all sides of the timber prior to installation
  3. Apply protection oil thinly along the wood grain with a natural bristle brush
  4. Work the oil into the surface of the wood grain
  5. Wipe of any excess with a clean, lint-free cloth
  6. Allow to fully dry
  7. Apply a second coat as above

Stir the contents of the tin thoroughly before and periodically during use.

  1. Use an application brush or decking applicator to apply the decking oil thinly and evenly, along the wood grain
  2. For a quick and easy application, we recommend using the Osmo Floor Brush which is perfect for decking and allows for the decking oil to be applied from a standing position when used with the Osmo Telescopic Handle
  3. When applying decking oil, If possible apply the first coat on all sides of the decking boards before installation
  4. Wipe off any excess decking oil and allow 10 to 12 hours drying time, with good ventilation, then apply the 2nd coat – also thinly

Aftercare

REGULAR CLEANING

Oiled surfaces can be regularly cleaned with a suitable exterior spray cleaner that won’t strip away the waxes and oils.

RENOVATION

When renovation is required, ensure that surfaces are clean and dry.

  1. Lightly sand or use a stiff brush to remove surface dirt and debris
  2. Apply a thin maintenance coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil, taking care to work the oil in to the surface of the wood and wiping off any excess
  3. For wood that has become discoloured or is showing signs of mould, algae or moss, refer to the preparation and application sections above

Maintenance

If the decking finish starts to look worn or tired over time as a result from heavy foot traffic or weathering, simply apply a fresh coat of Osmo Decking-Oil following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
