Osmo: The Perfect Finish for Wooden Decking
This finish protects, maintains and beautifies wood decking, garden furniture and fencing. It works for both softwoods and hardwoods. All color tones except Clear 1277 offer UV protection, and all variants are weather and water resistant. This plant-oil formula is easy to apply and maintain--unlike urethane based finishes, it won't peel or flake, and requires no sanding to reapply.
Osmo Decking Oil Advantages
- Effectively colors pressure treated and untreated woods
- Preserves the natural wood character and grain
- Micro-porous finish that will not crack, peel or flake
- Safe for animals and plants once dry
- Very water and dirt resistant – water beads on the surface
- Reduces wood swelling and shrinkage
- No sanding necessary for future applications
Note: Clear 1277 will allow for some natural graying of wood over time. The darker the wood, the longer it will take for greying to appear.
Preparation
Ensure that wood surfaces to be treated with Osmo UV Protection Oil are clean, dry and frost-free (moisture content max. 20%).
New Wood
- Surfaces should be sanded with a 120 grit abrasive and no finer
- New wood and especially hardwoods should be allowed to weather for approximately 6 weeks prior to oiling
- De-grease surfaces with white spirit or Osmo Brush Cleaner and Thinner (8000) before oiling
- Fill any holes or gaps with an exterior gap sealer
Please Note: Allowing the wood to weather, especially dense exotic hardwoods, enables the tight, dense grain of the timber to open up. This makes it easier to apply the oil and allows it to penetrate deeper in to the wood grain. We recommend 6 weeks of weathering for softer woods, and up to 12 weeks of weathering for exotic hardwoods and thermo-treated woods.
Old Wood
- Clean old microporous finishes (wood oils) thoroughly
- Areas affected by mold, algae and moss must be cleaned and treated
- Old paints, lacquers and varnish like stains must be completely removed
- The color of timber that has turned grey / silver over time can be restored prior to oiling with Osmo Wood Reviver Gel (6609)
- Then treat as New Wood
Application
Always do a test area before starting any project to check suitability and compatibility. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the tin at all times.
- Stir the oil thoroughly before and periodically during application
- Use an application brush or decking applicator to apply the decking oil thinly and evenly, along the wood grain
- For a quick and easy application, we recommend using the Osmo Floor Brush which is perfect for decking and allows for the decking oil to be applied from a standing position when used with the Osmo Telescopic Handle
- When applying decking oil, If possible apply the first coat on all sides of the decking boards before installation
- Wipe off any excess decking oil and allow 10 to 12 hours drying time, with good ventilation, then apply the 2nd coat – also thinly
Aftercare
REGULAR CLEANING
Oiled surfaces can be regularly cleaned with a suitable exterior spray cleaner that won’t strip away the waxes and oils. We recommend Osmo Decking Cleaner.
RENOVATION
When renovation is required, ensure that surfaces are clean and dry.
- Lightly sand or use a stiff brush to remove surface dirt and debris
- Apply a thin maintenance coat of Osmo UV Protection Oil, taking care to work the oil in to the surface of the wood and wiping off any excess
- For wood that has become discolored or is showing signs of mold, algae or moss, refer to the preparation and application sections above
Maintenance
If the decking finish starts to look worn or tired over time as a result from heavy foot traffic or weathering, simply apply a fresh coat of Osmo Decking-Oil following the Preparation and Application instructions above.
