Wood Species

RealCraft is proud to offer over 20 beautiful and responsibly sourced wood species, the more extensive selection in the market! Our options include a wood species for every taste and pocket. Discover inexpensive and budget-friendly options as well as luxurious and exotic species. Some customer's favorites include:

  • Alder;
  • Zebra Wood;
  • White Oak;
  • Reclaimed Wood.

The wood species play a vital role in the barn door's final look, so make sure to consider many possibilities!

It is also important to remember that wood is (and will always be) a natural, living material with unique properties. Every wood species is different and will react differently to various temperatures and humidity conditions. For example, if your door will be in an exterior area, it is a good idea to explore native wood species from your location as they will do much better with the climate conditions over the years. That's not the case for interior doors, though. Since your home's internal temperature is usually controlled, pretty much any wood species will last for decades keeping its visual appeal and natural properties.

Did you know that we partnered with Verdn and the Eden Reforestation Projects, and now 25 new trees are planted worldwide for every sliding barn door we sell! This action is aligned with RealCraft's vision and values of creating beautiful and sustainable wood products.

All of RealCraft's Barn Doors, Carriage Doors, Swinging Doors, and Butcher Block Countertops are handcrafted in made by hand in our facility in Gig Harbor, Washington, USA.

We highly recommend adding a finish to your door to protect it and make sure that it is eligible to be covered by our warranty.

If you'd like us to take care of door finishing, we will apply several coats of the finish of your choice on all sides of the planks. When the kit arrives, you can assemble the pieces yourself. If DIY isn't your thing, we'll finish and assemble your door - just select those options in the menu above! Clear finishes are only available if we assemble the door for you.

Each species of wood we offer boasts its own unique characteristics. Finishing your door with a clear urethane will not only protect it, but enhance the beauty of the wood by bringing out the striking color and detail of the grain. We offer Osmo clear satin finish, which is a hand-rubbed hardwax oil that conditions and coats the wood; or clear urethane, which is a plastic sealing coat that is water-resistant and more durable for environments that can cause lots of wear and tear on a door. Read more about the finishes we offer here.

Our color finishes are made for those who want to add some interesting elements to their space. We mixed these colors ourselves to ensure we could offer exclusive and high quality formulas, in the exact colors we wanted to see! From Coastal White (a pure white barn door finish) to Pacific Blue (a jewel blue tone inspired by the ocean), you're sure to fall in love with these versatile finishes.

White primer can be added to the Paint Grade Hardwood option. For this option, we use only high-quality hardwoods like European Beech or Red Grandis. These species provide a smooth surface for paint.

Please note that all barn doors will ship separately from sliding hardware when purchased together. Doors are pictured with hardware for context. Sliding hardware is sold separately, and not included with the purchase of a door. Doors will not be pre-drilled for hardware. If you order a door and a hardware kit, we are unable to ship hardware installed on doors due to the risk of shipping damage.

We designed these doors with interior applications in mind. We don't recommend exterior use, and can't guarantee against warping or damage if you install your door outside. To have this door specially crafted for exterior use, call us at 1-800-694-5977and we will be happy to help!

If you need more than 10 doors, or if your project requires special consideration, please call 1-800-694-5977. We'd be happy to help!

When choosing a sliding barn door size, we recommend that the door overlaps the doorway slightly to minimize gaps. An inch of overlap on each side is a good rule for barn doors. In this case, a 36” x 80” doorway would need a 38” x 81” sliding barn door.

We offer the most common sliding barn door sizes online, but we are able to make doors in any size you need. Please call our team at 1-800-694-5977 for custom door options.
